Exploring Moral Boundaries through Israel vs Palestine.

The ISTD brief was to use typography in a way that best described the Line. The response could be completely subjective, determined by what the designer believed what ‘the line’ meant. Below are some words I drew from ‘the line’:

  • Decisive
  • Divide
  • Ethical
  • Moral
  • Boundaries
  • Walls
  • Non-negotiable
  • Opinion

Process

Initial research informed me of the history of the conflict, but for the copy I used first hand accounts of the conflict, in the form of poems and news articles. The design process involved experimentation of text in different weights, fonts, and languages. Combining the use of bold, black and white imagery, mixed with carefully placed typography.

The grid was essential in presenting the work in a flow that represented a line. This was reflected in the final piece which involved each design connected using barbed wire and hanging from the ceiling. From a physical perspective, looking at the thin edge of the paper, the art formed a line that flowed and moved. Representative of the border moving with political plays and conflicts.
